What is the purpose?
Person county has experienced turnover in key community leadership positions and at the same time it is wrestling with how to grow but not lose the rural character that draws so many to this place. The Roxboro Area Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Piedmont Community College would like to coordinate taking a group of community leaders on a Dream it, See it trip to:
- Have Person County Leaders (official and unofficial) dream about the future of this community in new ways
- Identify opportunities for collaboration amongst group members
- Lay the groundwork for deliberate plans for the future
- Identify lessons learned from a peer community about how to move forward
Sanford, North Carolina - June 6, 2023
Why Sanford? 15 years ago, Sanford wrestled with many of the same questions Roxboro faces and it shares a historical dependence on agriculture, it has a regional airport, and has a similar political climate. In recent years, because of strategic risks the community took, today it is experiencing unprecedented growth. We have worked with a local travel agent to coordinate the logistics, and Piedmont Community College President, Dr. Pamela Senegal, has worked diligently with her counterpart in Sanford, Dr. Lisa Chapman, to create a robust schedule of connections for every participant.
What to Expect
Dream It!Before leaving on the trip, all attendees are required to come to a pre-trip meeting on May 9, 2023. This meeting will allow all participants to meet each other, have a meal together, work with a facilitator, discuss ground rules, and objectives.
At this time, attendees will be given access to virtual notebooks, photo sharing applications, and given any other necessary materials. We will review the agenda together, make recommendations, and the most important part of all : Clarify WHY you are attending |
See It!Attendees will gather at a central meeting location to board a bus with breakfast provided as well as refreshments on the bus for throughout the day. Facilitator will engage with the group and get the thinking juices flowing before arriving.
An agenda will be predetermined and will be followed closely. Attendees will breakout with their respective counterparts in Sanford to learn, network, and explore. Groups will reconvene and will sit down to a lunch with everyone. A tour of Downtown Sanford, a Main Street participant, the Industrial Parks, and wrapping up with a facilitated discussion at the civic center. Group will go to dinner and then board the bus to head back to Person County. |
Do It!Within a week of returning, all attendees are required to attend the post-trip dinner meeting on June 13, 2023. This meeting will allow all participants to have the trip fresh in their memory, allowed time to gather thoughts on how to implement what each of the attendees learned, and to reflect as whole group.
At this time, attendees can share notes, photos, and other archive materials for respective people to look back on at any point. Some archive materials will be password protected and attendees of the trip will have access to the password. Finally, at this meeting the group will discuss next steps for Person County! |
