It doesn't take long to realize that the arts are important in Person County. From a thriving Performing Arts Series to a beautiful theater and art gallery, a multitude of disciplines can easily be found, due to a positive working relationship with the Person County Recreation Arts and Parks and the Person County Arts Council. “The arts are alive and well,” says Doug Newell, executive director of the Person County Arts Council. Each year the Arts Council sponsors a Performing Arts Series that consists of a variety of outstanding entertainment offerings. Patrons have been enchanted by the sounds of great classical music provided by The Chamber Orchestra Kremlin from Moscow, the country bluegrass of Rhonda Vincent or a Broadway touring company performance of “Dream Girls”. “There is always something for everyone” in the Performing Arts Series. “Support for the arts is reaching new heights with the growth of our patron base both inside and outside the county border,” says Newell. The crown jewel of the arts program is the historic Kirby Theater, a Person County government property, located on Main Street in historic uptown Roxboro. From its large-scale seating for over 850 concert-goers to its grand interior featuring tremendous hand painted murals, patrons are visually dazzled even before the show begins. Once a thriving movie palace, the Kirby is the main location for a large portion of arts programming hosting such names as Branford Marsalis, The Count Basie Orchestra and many more. Businesses will find the Kirby Theater to be a good space for conferencing. The Kirby is equipped with state-of-the-art lighting and projection systems that make it very amenable to Power Point presentations for large corporate groups or even small business gatherings. The Kirby Gallery at 213 North Main Street directly adjoined to the Theater, is a place where local and regional artists can display and sell their creations. With monthly exhibit rotation, art lovers can view a dynamic range of art disciplines. All local arts groups work together to enrich the cultural beauty of Roxboro and Person County. The Gallery is also used to teach private voice, guitar, and piano lessons. The Gallery boasts very capable teachers on staff, many of which hold advanced degrees. Arts in Education are a high priority to this community. The North Carolina Symphony, dynamic story telling by Donna Washington, and the jazz sounds of Frank Kimbrough are among just a few of the performances taken directly to our students in schools or by bringing them to the Kirby. The Arts Council’s main mission is to promote and expose all students to as many art disciplines as possible. We are a small community with BIG ideas” says Newell. “Come to Person County and help us grow the arts in the good soil of Person County.” and kirbytheater.com.
